On May 10, 1869, trains from the Pacific Coast and America's Midwest met cowcatcher-to-cowcatcher at Promontory Point, Utah Territory, and the nation was tied together by rail from ocean to ocean. It was the opening of an era in which rail transportation was the way to go, for products and for people.

The romance of railroading has become an absorbing hobby for many Americans, and a collection of personal checks featuring all things railroad provides an opportunity to make the hobby a constant part of life. From the old wood- or coal-burning steam engines to sleeker diesel engines, the collection pinpoints the power and beauty of an industry that did and continues to do important service to the American way of life.
